Tip: Categorizing images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations"). Pro-tip: The CommonSense tool can help you find the best category for your image.

Display problem

Hello, some large pictures are not handled very well by some web browsers. For example, I use Firefox 3 and I can't see the image either, but generally they look fine once used in articles or if you click on them to see the full-size version. Cordially, Alchemica (talk) 11:45, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

I didn't place a deletion request here I never even saw this request until today. I don't see any problem with the image. But if you have a question, you should ask Admin Abigor in Holland. He can answer your questions and maybe remove the incomplete DR template on that image. I am not an Admin here, only a trusted user who can mark flickr images. Yes, because the art is a two-dimensional image. If it had been a three-dimensional work (e.g. a sculpture), then who took the photograph is important, because there is creative work involved (choice of the best angle to take the photo from). But with a straight-on photo of a flat object, no significant creative effort has been used, so the only copyright that matters is that of the original artist. For things where the author is not known, it is safest to assume it is copyright and can't be uploaded, unless you know for certain that it is very old (anything done in the 19th century or earlier, the author is highly likely to have been dead more than 70 years) - MPF (talk) 15:29, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

Sadly, we can't use that image at all because Romanian law (section 33 (1)(h) of the law of Copyright of 1996) requires us to have the permission of the person who created the headstone/monument as well as that of the photographer (see COM:FOP). File renaming

I noticed you started a deletion request on File:Iosif Fazekas.jpg, which you uploaded yourself, telling that it had a wrong name. That system is for deleting files that may not be free or within the project's scope, renaming a file is a lot easier. Simply type {{rename|the new name you want for the file}} and an admin will rename it. But in this case, now that we are at it, simply tell me which name would you like, and will move the file. Freedom of Panorama

You nominated a lot of images for deletion from countries that have freedom of panorama, but freedom of panorama means that statues, buildings, monuments, and other things found in public places may be photographed freely, without violating any copyright. Salut Cezar, Am vazut ca ai postat o imagine cu Biserica "Sf. Apostoli Petru şi Pavel" din Bădeuţi (1935), fostă biserică evanghelică. Eu lucrez in prezent la o harta etnica a Bucovinei pentru anul 1910 si am o problema in a identifica exact localizarea satului Badeuti german. Ai vreo informatie in acest sens sau macar poate stii sa-mi spui unde e biserica respectiva in Badeutii de azi caci ma gandesc ca ar trebui sa fie in centrul vechii comunitati germane? 1) what does the law of the Republic of Moldova has to Transnistria? Transnistria and Moldova are two different states. In Transnistria no laws of the Republic of Moldova, in the same way as in Moldova do not have laws Transnistria;

2) You have written: "The basis of Commons is the commercial uses of the images." Excuse me, as I thought Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons are free and open source projects.

3) So you can mark brand is all my photos as well as photos of all the other users of Transnistria, Moldova, Ukraine, Russia and other countries. Color states that in the above map red! Now let's say that you can not take pictures: the Kremlin, the Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum, the Parthenon... After all, it's completely absurd. But these countries are also marked in red.

The laws in Ukraine are strictly and don't permit the commercial use of an image of a recent artistic work (unless the author died more than 70 years ago). The existence de facto of Transnistria doesn't change the situation: no country recognize it. The transnistrian postition is one nationalist. I judge the situation according the laws and not emotionally. USA (on which territory is located Wikimedia Foundation) doesn't recognize the transnistrian laws, so the rules for Transnistria are the rules for the Republic of Moldova. Dacă democraţia şi civilizaţia ca în Austria şi Germania nu pot fi obţinute prin memorii şi iniţiative către parlamentarii care ar trebui să ne reprezinte interesele ar trebui intervenit prin altfel de mijloace pentru a demonstra că totul e absurd. Dar pentru reuşita demersului este necesară coalizarea a cât mai multor persoane şi din mai multe state. Susţin egalizarea legislaţiei pentru a elimina tot ce este absurd şi poate constitui o frână în cale progresului. Ar trebui stârnită o revoluţie virtuală pentru a obţine ceea ce ar trebui să existe în ţările noastre. Ce spun poate părea utopic, dar nu văd o altă soluţie pentru a combate inerţia şi rigiditatea sistemelor birocratice din ţările noastre. Avem de ales între a trăi într-un sistem dictatorial ca în Rusia lui Putin (importat şi în majoritatea ţărilor din lagărul comunist - mai puţin în ţările baltice) sau într-un sistem civilizat ca în Germania.
