Uploading logos[edit]
I am trying to upload the logo of Grunt which is a open-source software. I am guessing it is not trademarked, but I cannot be sure. How can I confirm this? Also, I am unable to find designer's name and date of publication for this image. Can anyone suggest how I may find this information? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mohits19 (talk • contribs) 14:47, 13 September 2016 (UTC)
- Trademark is not an issue, except for possibly using the {{trademark}} template. The question is whether it is copyrighted. You don't point to an example online, but this is presumably recent enough that if it rises to the threshold of originality necessary for copyright, then it is copyrighted. - Jmabel ! talk
Bulgarian "Wiki Loves Monuments" question[edit]
Photos have camera location, but do not show on OpenStreetMap.[edit]
I took photos with my iPhone and unloaded to Wikimedia Commons. These pictures all have camera location, but some do not show on OpenStreetMap(eg.[1]to[2]), and others could do(eg.[3] to[4]). Do anyone know why? Thank you.--Outlookxp (talk) 14:17, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
- Maybe it just takes some time for the software to process new uploads. For me, both maps are showing a red cross so I guess it is now working. This, however, is very to hard to spot because it is "buried" under a Wikimedia Commons symbol, but if you zoom in on the location you'll also see the marker.
Verunka

- I'm not sure why you are asking this here on Wikimedia Commons. Although Wikimedia Commons, the English-language Wikipedia, and the French-language Wikipedia are all Wikimedia Foundation projects, they are basically separately run. I might have missed something (French is about my 7th-best language) but you don't seem to be asking for anything pertinent to this site. If you are, could you please repeat the particular point with which you want help here? - Jmabel ! talk 15:08, 22 September 2016 (UTC)
- Of course if a French-speaker sees something relevant here that I've missed, please help this user! - Jmabel ! talk 15:08, 22 September 2016 (UTC)
The French language Forum is quite active, hence better ask there: → Commons:Bistro

Question about the PD-Art tag[edit]
I have a question about PD-Art tag. I have read Commons:Licensing and Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag and I am still not sure whether or not it is Ok to use the PD-Art tag in the specific case I am interested in. Namely, I would like to upload a small picture of Louis Barnett Abrahams taken from a June 27, 1905 edition of the British newspaper "The Sphere", see here[5], on page 282 at the top, the portrait in the middle. The picture itself is a photo of a portrait drawn by Solomon J. Solomon. The name of the person who took the photo is not specified. Since the newspaper was published in the U.K., and the portrait itself was drawn there as well, and this happened before January 1, 1923, my impression is that if I cut out the photo of the portrait, e.g. like this[6], the resulting image would be considered to be in public domain in the U.S. However, I am still not sure if I am allowed to upload such an image to Commons with the PD-Art tag. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks, Nsk92 (talk) 02:43, 23 September 2016 (UTC)
- 1923 is relevant only for the U.S.
- A faithful photograph of a 2-dimensional public domain work is still public domain. If the original is in the public domain, then so is the photograph. - Jmabel ! talk 15:55, 23 September 2016 (UTC)
-
- Thanks, but I am not sure how that resolves my problem. My impression is that the image in question is definitely in public domain in the U.S., but may or may not be in public domain in its country of origin, the U.K. The reason for the latter is that under the U.K. law the copyright protection expires 70 years after the author's death. In this case that would mean that in the U.K. the image is in public domain if the author died prior to 1946. The portrait was drawn in 1905, and we have no information on when the author died. He could have died before 1946 or after 1946. Regardless, because the portrait was produced before 1923, my understanding is that the photo is considered to be in public domain in the U.S. So I am still unclear on what the bottom line conclusion is regarding the possible usage of he PD-Art tag in this case. Nsk92 (talk) 19:03, 23 September 2016 (UTC)
- You mentioned the author. If he's him, he died in 1927. On Commons, some users would use {{PD-Art-two|PD-old-90|PD-1923}}. Depends if you are ok with it. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:11, 23 September 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, it is indeed him. I did not realize this fact until another editor at Wikipedia pointed this out. The caption in the newspaper identifies the painter of the portrait as Solomon J. Solomon, R.A.. The postnomials R.A. mean member of the Royal Academy of Arts, and there was only one Solomon J. Solomon who was a member of the academy at the time, so I think that definitively identifies him as the painter of the portrait. Before I figured this out, I have already uploaded the image to en-wiki, because I was certain that the image is in public domain in the U.S. but not certain if it is in the public domain in the U.K. Nsk92 (talk) 00:02, 24 September 2016 (UTC)

- Hello, This is the help desk page for Commons, the media website. Your question is not about Commons. It is apparently about lt.wikipedia, the encyclopedia. You should consult the policies on lt.wikipedia and try to contact someone from lt.wikipedia if you need explanations about something there. All we know here is what you see in the comment you quoted above: the administrator on lt.wikipedia considered that your account was only for publicity. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:04, 23 September 2016 (UTC)
- You tried to add information about a company which does not appear to be relevant for inclusion in an encyclopedia and for which you have a paid conflict of interest. As far as I know, that's not allowed on any language edition of Wikipedia. You may wish to read Commons:Guidance for paid editors.
- As already noted, you're also on the wrong web site. If you look at the address bar of your browser (a good habit to get into if you want to avoid falling victim to phishing), you'll notice that you are on Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia. If you have further questions about the specifics about why you were blocked on some other site, I suggest you ask at that site. —LX (talk, contribs) 14:22, 23 September 2016 (UTC)
- I believe he posted here because if you can't post on the Wikipedia in question (cannot edit own talk page), Wikimedia Commons might seem to be a logical place to complain.--Prosfilaes (talk) 01:50, 24 September 2016 (UTC)
really weird problem (File:Keep Calm Record.jpg)[edit]
Im having problems using the file File:Keep Calm Record.jpg in a page. See [7] It is too big like this, but it needs to be seen. Suggestions? Ive never run into this before.AlejandroLinaresGarcia (talk) 17:33, 23 September 2016 (UTC)
- It's a CMYK JPEG, which isn't very well supported by the server software. It should work fine when you convert it to RGB. --rimshottalk 18:50, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Can't update image[edit]
Hi. I originally loaded the image File:Newport IW Quay.jpg to English Wikipedia. It was transferred here by someone else. Now I want to load a new version (change the colour balance slightly as the original is a bit green). However, at the page File:Newport IW Quay.jpg I see the message "You cannot overwrite this file". Why can I not overwrite it? Mypix (talk) 17:54, 24 September 2016 (UTC)
- Probably because you have no prior contributions on Commons. There's a minimum threshold of edits for overwriting files, but I don't know the details. There may be some way an admin can override that in this case, you should probably ask at Commons:Administrators' noticeboard. - Jmabel ! talk 02:24, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
Is that free?[edit]
Hello,
I have the opportunity to upload the following files but I don't know if I can:
- Photo a painting exhibition - paintings can be seen but the photo mainly depicts the exhibition
- Page from a movie's original scenario (text cannot really be read)
- Two planning documents of a movie set
- Cards from a TV presenter with text on a side and logo of the show on the other side
Can those be free pictures?
Thanks for your help, FR (talk) 20:30, 24 September 2016 (UTC)
- That's a lot of different questions! Several of these are marginal calls, so don't upload them if you will be offended about your wasted time if they get deleted. If that's no problem, I'd suggest that you link the uploads here so someone can follow up and make judgments based on something more concrete.
- For the exhibition: if any of the paintings are copyrighted and are legible, you might consider covering them with a Gaussian blur. It's hard to say something general without seeing the image, because there is no way for me to know how legible any one painting might be. See File:Georgetown Rainier malt house interior 03 - blurred.jpg for an example where I did this: click through and you'll see that they are quite blurred.
- If the text is not legible, I'm guessing there would be no problem, but again, it could be otherwise.
- Unless you are the author of the planning documents, that's probably not your prerogative. They'd be inherently copyrighted.
- I'd guess not OK, but hard to say without seeing it. Is the logo just text and simple geometric shapes? If so, it would not be eligible for copyright (although thresholds vary in different countries, and you didn't say what country). If the text is just name, address, etc. then it's not copyrightable, but if there is, say, a few sentences of slogan, it might be.
- I hope that helps. - Jmabel ! talk 02:44, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
Permission[edit]
How do you ask someone who took a picture that you can use their photo for Wikimedia Commons? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bryson483 (talk • contribs) 23:28, 24 September 2016 (UTC)
- Pretty much the same way you ask for anything else. Do you know the person? If not, do you have a common language? Are they a professional photographer? Do they probably know what Commons is? Do they have any history of free-licensing photos? Is the photo already online in digital form? Is there exactly one photo you want to use, or are you looking to make a broader arrangement? Without answers to questions like that it would be pretty hard to give you at all a detailed answer, but there is one thing for certain: you'll need to have them give permisssion as explained at COM:OTRS. Just your word for having permission won't be enough for you to upload here. - Jmabel ! talk 02:33, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

Hi, I've been trying to upload 2 images of amanita manginiana. These were quickly reverted saying those were unconstructive edits, though I gave the author (Rodham E. I need help since I'll use these for the Wikipedia article I'm trying to do. Democratics (talk) 05:56, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

Uploading photos[edit]
Hi. I have two photos of an MP I want to upload. The MP has emailed them to me - and granted full and free permission to use them on Wikipedia under a free licence. ( Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 License??) I have the email ready and willing to send off to the OTRS people for confirmation. Am I alright to upload? Myosotis Scorpioides
- (The following presumes that the MP is indeed the copyright holder. As the subject of the photo he/she may not be: usually copyright resides with the photographer.) Forward the email to COM:OTRS. They prefer to get them directly, but I presume that if the original email address is visible in the forward, that should suffice. You might want to cc the original address so they know it's legit. Then when you upload, remember to add {{OTRS pending}} so that someone looking at the file page can see what's going on. - Jmabel ! talk 14:58, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

--Furfur ⁂ Diskussion 05:23, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

- This is Wikimedia Commons, not Wikipedia. There are no articles here, nor is it the place to make a case on whether your show is notable enough for a Wikipedia article (you'd have to convince Wikipedia editors of that; for what it's worth the, key to that is to find third-party writing about your show).
- On the other hand, for materials to which you own copyright, if you are willing to release them under a free license, those would probably be welcome here. - Jmabel ! talk 16:02, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

Adding a Category[edit]
I want to add a sub-category "Episcopal Hymnals" to the category "Hymnals". I have read up on how to add a category and know the images that I want to include in the new sub-category. But how will I know that the new sub will be under the existing parent cat? Under Commons:Category it says to add: "Category-links that put it into one or more parent categories. At the bottom of the new page, insert lines of the form [[Category:Relevant categories]]." But how do I accomplish this if I use the category wizard? - I have created Category:Episcopal hymnals for you (not different capitalization, following Commons normal rules for this). I have no idea about a "category wizard", but when you want to create a new category, you can just navigate to the where the category page would be and click the "Create" button. - Jmabel ! talk 05:11, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

Category:Images_from_Fortepan and Category:Colour photographs_from_Fortepan[edit]
Category:Images_from_Fortepan has 69.855 images, Category:Colour photographs from Fortepan has 5129. Impossible to investigate in categorisation, as you can only switch page by page by 200 images. Is it - via a bot - possible to split up these categories in categories by 1000 or so? Or is there an other way? --Stunteltje (talk) 08:25, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
- You could -- for example -- use VFC to mark the ones in Category:Colour photographs from Fortepan that are also in Category:Images_from_Fortepan. But I'm not sure what exactly you are trying to do, so maybe that wouldn't be useful. - Jmabel ! talk 15:10, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
- It is not my intention to delete files. I just want categories of say 1000 files, otherwise I cannot categorise files say 40.365 to 41.365, because I have to click per 200 files, starting at 201 every time. Doesn't work. --Stunteltje (talk) 19:16, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
- I'm confused by your last remark. I didn't suggest anything about deleting files. I was suggesting that you could use VFC to attach a temporary category (or other searchable mark) to files you wanted to work on. Perhaps I jumped to a conclusion in thinking you were looking for the intersection between these two categories you mentioned.
- What exactly is it you are trying to do (intended end result)? - Jmabel ! talk 04:26, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
- Not you, but VFC asked the deletion when I tried it without installing. What I want is to start all over again after a categorisation, but with file 201, 1201, 2201 ..... 41401, 42601 .... and so on. So not more than about 1000 files. Otherwise when a file was categorised, I have to start with file 1 again. That's all. A solution like the new uploaded files: (new | oldest) (50 new | 50 old) (20 | 50 | 100 | 250 | 500) bekijken. But to start with a self given digit. --Stunteltje (talk) 07:23, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
- I'm not sure about VFC without installing, but VFC has a dropdown (where there default is to nominate for deletion, which I personally find annoying but so be it) that lets you choose to substitute text, append text, etc. But that sounds like it won't work for you here, anyway. So let's try a different question: Is there an easy way to see content of these categories starting alphabetically either at a particular offset from the beginning or at a particular file? It looks in this case like the category sort keys may be a little weird, so a generic answer may not do it for you here. - Jmabel ! talk 16:41, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

Uploading our updated logo to our wikipedia page[edit]
Hi there, I'd like to add our new logo to our charity's wikipedia page. Is there a way to do this? It seems logos aren't allowed on commons pages so I can't figure out how to add it to our wikipedia page. Thank you, Emma. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Digitalmanager16 (talk • contribs) 09:31, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
- I'm guessing (since you are writing in English) that you mean the English-language Wikipedia. Unlike Commons, that does accept copyrighted images on a non-free use basis. I'm guessing (though you don't say, and you don't indicate the name of the organization) that your new logo qualifies for copyright, and that is the issue.
- In the English-language Wikipedia, read en:Wikipedia:Non-free_content_criteria to make sure you understand the policy; then you will want to upload your image in the English-language Wikipedia, not in Commons, at en:Special:Upload and probably use en:Template:Non-free logo in your upload. - Jmabel ! talk 15:04, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
File:Barkley Thompson at the Christ Church Cathedral (Episcopal) in Houston, Texas, Lenten Lecture Series 2014.png[edit]
I would like to request deletion of this image because there is an exact duplicate image (except better resolution) existing in the same category (Episcopal Church (USA)). Is this something that would qualify for "speedy deletion"? In future, is this the way to request removal of an image or is there a better way? Thanks, Drbones1950 (talk) 15:23, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
- You can mark the page of the small file with {{dupe}}. The other image, File:Barkley Thompson Lenten Lecture Series 2014.jpg, seems to be the smaller one, so I marked that one. BMacZero (talk) 17:53, 28 September 2016 (UTC)

There are 3 warnings with the forms above. We recommend correcting them before continuing.

Verifying OTRS letters from people with little or no Internet connection[edit]
Wiki Learning Tec de Monterrey (an approved WMF user group [8] is currently working on its annual "Semana i" projects. One of the activities this week is the videoing of interviews with notable Mexican artists, or in some cases, family of deceased artists. Several have offered images of artists and works for Wikipedia. I have explained free licenses etc and they are willing to sign stuff over to CC-by-SA 4.0. However, most of these are older people with little or no Internet presence. I would like to know if Commons would accept verification of the letters (really from and signed by the person indicated) from Wiki Learning Tec de Monterrey, sent from my Tec de Monterrey email address. Getting the Lead/Main article image via the API[edit]
Hello Community!
I've been trying to use the API to retrieve the main/lead article image but I haven't found a way to do that. Using Chris Farley as an example: Thefollowing would give me the image of the grave stone: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&prop=pageimages&format=json&titles=Chris_Farley
While https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&prop=images&format=json&titles=Chris_Farley would give me a list of the images on the page, but with no indicator to say which image is the main one.
Update: If I go to https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Chris_Farley&action=info I see the same result I would see in the API call (which is different than https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Farley [top image on the right] ) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hibans (talk • contribs) 02:06, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

- PageImages seems to do what you want. But see the "Image Choice" section of that linked page, which says that "Non-free images may be skipped for copyright reasons", and the first image on the Chris Farley page is non-free. --ghouston (talk) 02:51, 29 September 2016 (UTC)
Color distortion when thumbnail or in infobox[edit]
When I view an image I uploaded as thumbnail (COMMONS File page) or in an infobox (WP article) the upper half of it has adulterated color. It looks fine when I view the source file or when I click on the thumbnail to view full screen. I've tried viewing from two different computer systems (both Windows 7 however) but same result. The file is .jpg and 8.85 MB. Where can I get technical explanation why the color distortion is occurring at thumbnail size and in infobox, and how to correct it? Thank you. I would suggest eliminating the sub-category "Categories of Arizona" from the category "Arizona" because each of the listed categories under it are also sub-categories of the category "Arizona", and it does not aid in searching. Thanks, Drbones1950 (talk) 16:09, 30 September 2016 (UTC)

Public Domain[edit]
I have an image taken from a digitized copy of a book published in 1903. Would this image automatically be in the public domain because it was published before 1920? If I can use i in Wikimedia, where can I find the wording to use to indicate its public license? And what do I need to include to document the origin? Thanks, Drbones1950 (talk) 02:15, 1 October 2016 (UTC)
- If the book was first published in USA, you can use {{pd-1923}}. If it was first published in another country, you should use the above mentioned template plus another template to indicate that the book is in public domain (if it is, of course) in the source country. File Name[edit]
Just wondering. I uploaded my first image of Bryce Canyon in Utah. It kept telling me that that file name was already in use. How many file names are there for a monument like Bryce Canyon? I finally entered 'Visit Bryce Canyon'. Is that the correct way of doing this? Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dslcards (talk • contribs) 02:20, 01 October 2016 (UTC)
- @Dslcards: That is quite good name. If this happens again you can also try some variations of "Bryce Canyon, September 2007" etc. This kind of thing can happen with popular subjects. Category:Bryce Canyon National Park and its subcategories contain 1095 images, and a couple of hundred of them start with "Bryce Canyon". MKFI (talk) 08:30, 1 October 2016 (UTC)

- I added back some categories that you didn't bring over from the other photo. Generally, when doing this, you should bring over all categories unless they don't pertain to the cropped image (e.g. you cropped out what the category related to).
- Most importantly, I did one step you missed: I used the "other versions" to relate the two images, using {{extracted from}} and {{image extracted}}. - Jmabel ! talk 15:49, 1 October 2016 (UTC)

- That's an auto-comment when the file is uploaded. Every normal file has that. It contains the file description page contents, or the beginning of it. I don't think you can provide any other kind of comment for normal uploads. Some API uploads (Commonist, mobile apps) or special cases (cross-wiki uploads, file transfers from wikis) may contain different comments. And to "fix" it I think you would need to upload a new version (you can provide a comment for that) and then ask an admin to delete the original. MKFI (talk) 20:19, 1 October 2016 (UTC)

Categories[edit]
When I upload a photo and fill out the required info I come to the category window.
For example, I upload an image of a plaza in Seville by the name of Plaza de Nuevo, in Seville, in Spain.
The categories I would choose are: Spain, Seville, and Plaza de Nuevo.
Spain and Seville are common categories. But when I type in Plaza de Nuevo, I am prompted that there is no category for that, and that I should give edit required information, or continue.
My question is: Should Plaza de Nuevo be a category or should "Plazas" be the category.
Everything is uploading fine, however, I want our friends to be able to access the image easily.
Please advise, and thank you for your assist!

problem in loading a new version[edit]
Good morning,
a month ago I've loaded a graph of solar spectrum. After seeing the effect of texts in medium-little images, I've enhanced the text of graph and created a new image of that file. I tried twice to load the right file as updated version of the file, wikimedia commons load the correct file and show me icon correctly. Unfortunately when I go to see the new version of file, it show me always the old version... I don't know why.. Who knows why ?

Warning: One of the categories lacks a description page.[edit]
I have posted this inquiry earlier but got no response so I will try again to see if someone knows the answer.
When I upload an image with the Upload Wizard I do the following:
Title Description Date Categories
With the Categories, sometimes I get a warning that "oone of the categories lacks a description page. Are you sure you typed the name correctly? For instance if I type in the name of the Lake in the photo, like Wiwane Lake, it comes up red. How does this effect the upload if I continue? Can I only use 'categories' that are already on Wikimedia Commons?
Thank you for you time. I appreciate it. Donald Scott Lee — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dslcards (talk • contribs) 14:35, 02 October 2016 (UTC)
- Generally, if you use a category that is not already on Wikimedia Commons, you will need to create the category. It is not very useful to use a nonexistent category.
- You might want to read Commons:Categories some time: it will give you a much better understanding of how categories work on Commons. They are quite different from (for example) Flickr tags. - Jmabel ! talk 16:51, 2 October 2016 (UTC)
PD-CAGov[edit]
Natuur12 suggested using Commmons help, back in July 2015 I uploaded an image that came from the City of San Diego and the permission tag for uploading the image that was determined to be the correct one was PD-CAGov (File:San Diego TwinPorts proposal-Ron Roberts 1991.jpg) for the Wikipedia article Cross Border Xpress. I was the founder and main negotiator for the Tijuana cross border terminal from 1986-2006. For the Wiki article, I obtained two more pictures from the City of San Diego to help clarify the "rapid development" of the Ejido Tampico between 2000-2006, and the Sinaloa Cartel drug tunnels dug from and around the Tijuana airport (drug tunnel corridors) into Otay Mesa, San Diego, both subjects of which are covered in the Wiki articled but hard to visualize without images. I used these photos from the City of San Diego (same source as the TwinPorts image already used) as the base images to create two new images to help the reader see the rapid development and the reach of the Sinaloa cartel in and around the Tijuana airport, do I use the same permission tag as used with the File:San Diego TwinPorts proposal-Ron Roberts 1991.jpg i.e. Template:PD-CAGov. The new images are from 2000 and 2006, the descriptors on the two new images images I added to identify landmarks and drug tunnel corridors. Simply would like to make sure I use the correct source and permission tag for the two new uploads i.e. PD-CAGov. Thank you`Rnieders (talk) 03:37, 3 October 2016 (UTC)
- Convenience link: File:San Diego TwinPorts proposal-Ron Roberts 1991.jpg (looks like this needs categories). Only someone who has seen the prior correspondence can work out whether that would be covered by the prior permission filed with OTRS (vs. needing a new additional permission letter), and most of us, even administrators, have no access to OTRS correspondence. You'd have to ask at Commons:OTRS noticeboard, unless there is a case to be made that this is simply public domain based on general California government policies for such images. - Jmabel ! talk 04:04, 3 October 2016 (UTC)
