(Backlog task)
After a recent village pump discussion on Biodiversity Heritage Library duplicate files, the batch upload will continue but I shall be spending some time researching how to map the BHL uploaded jpeg files to their zipped/archived JP2 equivalent pages. If this is possible, then lossless PNG equivalents can be generated or significantly higher quality jpeg versions created than are available from BHL. Keep an eye on User:Fæ/Project list/Biodiversity Heritage Library for the results of investigation in a few weeks some months. 11:57, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

Category:Photographs by Carol M. Highsmith[edit]

"Race for the Cure" Photo by Highsmith uploaded as part of the batch under discussion, 1990. 19mb TIFF

given the news [1], would you consider a mass upload of Carol M. Highsmith at LOC? they say there are only 18000 files. cheers Slowking4 § Richard Arthur Norton's revenge 12:50, 29 July 2016 (UTC)

@Slowking4: I took a quick look but my existing way of uploading from the LoC does not work when there are gallery pages of photos within items. This can be added to my script, but due to urgent real life commitments, it will take a while for me to get to it. -- (talk) 04:30, 5 August 2016 (UTC)
well, i think they have added a new gallery front-end. here is an old search result by "highsm" [2]. i will be cleaning up the flickr uploads first, but 31798 will take a while for my vicuna methods. Slowking4 § Richard Arthur Norton's revenge 11:20, 5 August 2016 (UTC)
@Slowking4: Looked at this for 30mins today, uploading by LoC search term rather than collection looks easier. I need to factor in my newer ways of doing chunked uploads and use a bit of parallel threading to make it efficient. I'm busy/travelling for a couple of days, but will probably get to trialling a 'upload from LoC using a search term' by the weekend. This will ignore 'groups of images', but I can return to those later on. -- (talk) 10:45, 9 August 2016 (UTC)
thanks, let me know if i can help. Slowking4 § Richard Arthur Norton's revenge 11:27, 9 August 2016 (UTC)
@Slowking4: The LOC are now using CloudFlare to protect access, which was rather annoyingly blocking my automated access. Anyway, this forced me to spoof access a little, which is something I'd rather not have to do as it feels sneaky like I'm hacking CloudFlare. The other issue is the more recent bug of error types not working properly in Pywikibot, this makes it hard to upload a jpeg and a TIFF version of the same image using the same filename. I can fix this with a bit more sneakiness that I've used elsewhere, but I don't want to invest a lot of time while the weather is good in London, so I'll plan on returning to it later. But now skip these and take just the first TIFF match on an item page (there may be more than one in some instances, but I'm not sure why), which will obstruct Pywikibot 'normal' scripts from loading the jpeg version. Out of interest an old debug option of mine is logging these failures at User:Fæ/sandboxL. This is on the suspicion that the TIFF is a better archive version, but that's just an assumption. The cross-links will not be working and I'm not using a creator template, but I'll let it run as the result is pretty good as a start. The upload rate will be modest (as I write it's 2 photos/min), but that's no bad thing if there are formats changes or other issues in the first few hundred. If I get back and fix the remaining bugs, the upload rate could faster for the remainder.
You can find the new files at petscan report. -- (talk) 10:25, 25 August 2016 (UTC)
Update, taken it up a notch with two uploading threads. The 100MB+ TIFFs were slowing the process down, but with two threads it's averaging a reasonable 1 photo/minute. In the upload comment you can find the absolute position of the image in the 'highsm' LOC search, i.e. "P4.1023 TIFF (127.5mb)" means this was the 4th upload in the particular upload run and the 1023rd image in the LOC search results. Due to lag in the WMF servers, it is impossible to check for SHA values or even reliably check file existence shortly after upload for the larger files (>100MB). So my intelligent checks are running, but timeout failures mean I'm ignoring reported problems as unreliable noise. -- (talk) 09:43, 26 August 2016 (UTC)

Extra category brackets[edit]

Hi! You have created several hundred pages that contain a category with extra brackets. Are all these categories misstakes that can be deleted? Examples: 1, 2 and 3. Here is a search for this type of error. (It is not only your contributions in that search result.) Svensson1 (talk) 16:56, 2 September 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for highlighting it. I'll take a look at mass fixing these when I have some spare time. The error should be consistent. -- (talk) 07:48, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

@Slowking4: does this relate to an earlier discussion? -- (talk) 07:53, 6 September 2016 (UTC)
no, it just took me a year to notice your uploads there. they say their flickr feed is where to start, but the metadata needs some thought to connect images to doi / oclc number. maybe some wikidata for books and manuscripts will connect the dots. we need a "sum of all books" like sum of all paintings. Slowking4 § Richard Arthur Norton's revenge 11:27, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

Same topic[edit]

May you please also contact me? The quality of the ocr for the descriptions even for documents from the 2000s (e.g. Category:Bonner zoologische Beiträge) is abysmal.--Kopiersperre (talk) 07:35, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

@Kopiersperre: It would be interesting to selectively replace the OCR with new material/transcriptions, or just mass remove it for documents that are impossible to scan (like those with handwritten notes on illustrations). I kept it in as the archive supplied it, and in some cases recognized printed text can help with searching across the collection. -- (talk) 07:53, 6 September 2016 (UTC)
IMHO it would be ideal if all papers in BHL had DOIs and could be linked so from the description page here. OCR should be easy with tesseract, but I'm not a bot man.--Kopiersperre (talk) 08:20, 6 September 2016 (UTC)
It's unlikely that tesseract would do better with scans like this where, for instance the lines are not aligned (or otherwise easy to detect) and the dots on the i are hardly distinguishable from noise. Nemo 16:32, 6 September 2016 (UTC)
@Kopiersperre: Examining the source Flickrstream, the source Internet Archive and the BHL archive site, none appears to have a DOI for this work. If it existed, I would hope that the IA metadata would include it, as the BHL are dependent on the IA digitization for their own site. If the IA were to add DOI at some point, it would be possible for a housekeeping task to check for it and add it. -- (talk) 10:29, 9 September 2016 (UTC)

Question about a couple of files you uploaded in May 2016[edit]

Hi, Fae. I noticed these two files:

These appear to have been uploaded at the same time as a number of files that I have moved to the new category Category:The Maid in the Moon, and they appear to be more files for that song, until you look at the actual image. The images are each for an opera. I have recategorized them under the operas they show, but could you take a look and see what else you think should be done with them? Maybe rename them, maybe change the description info, etc.? Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:55, 22 September 2016 (UTC)

I believe these are adverts for the opera scores which are included in this print of The maid in the moon. So these are probably okay in the same category, as well as being added to categories for the advertized operas. -- (talk) 09:41, 23 September 2016 (UTC)
OK, I've put them in both. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 14:42, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Category:Photographs by Murray Foubister[edit]

Hi Fæ - a lot of the files in this batch have "..." in their Flickr titles, which have been carried into the Commons filenames. This isn't a good idea, as I gather some software will confuse the extra fullstops with the fullstop before the extension (.jpg), with if I recall rightly, double or triple dots coming under COM:MOVE criterion 6, "Non-controversial maintenance and bug fixes, including fixing double extensions, invalid or incorrect extensions, character handling problems, and other similar technical issues" (my italics). I've started moving some, and taking the opportunity to clean up the filenames (putting species first, then location, and clearer location detail) in the process - but there's a lot to do. Could any further new uploads have the excess dots removed before upload, please? Any other thoughts? Thanks! - MPF (talk) 20:10, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

It's fairly easy to mass change the ellipsis, I have a script that could do this if you don't want to. I have added a trap for new files, though honestly if "technical issues" arise, that's a problem with whoever is reusing the files with buggy software. Extra periods before the extension name should not cause anything to fall over, that's what I would call a bug that needs to be fixed.
BTW, the use of '...' can never be at the end of these filenames as there is always the Photo_id number in brackets at the end.
BTW2 something caused my uploads to jam. It's possible that a rename within the first minute of upload could cause some of my checks to do strange things, though I have not debugged the cause as it may be a one-off or internet transaction problems. It's best to make any large numbers of filename changes when you can see that the batch upload has completed, which should be in a day or two unless I get distracted. -- (talk) 21:32, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
Excellent, thanks! Apologies if any of my renames caused that problem, that wasn't something I was aware of (the first rename I did was a couple of hours after it was uploaded). - MPF (talk) 21:59, 25 September 2016 (UTC)
Should not be a problem so long as it's at least a few minutes after upload. The API is a bit laggy on seeing things on Commons after upload, hence some of my past uploads have many double uploads of the same file. -- (talk) 22:01, 25 September 2016 (UTC)

It seems we need to check the entire Category:Photographs by Carol M. Highsmith for more derivative works once your script has finished uploading this collection. I'm already seeing lots of sculptures and murals in there. De728631 (talk) 13:12, 26 September 2016 (UTC)
There are many, though none 'urgent'. For simplicity I suggest a maintenance category rather than multiple DRs.
It's unfortunate there's no easy way of pre-filtering and I wanted to get on with capturing the collection in the light of the associated legal case. -- (talk) 13:32, 27 September 2016 (UTC)

Upload Error files[edit]

  • These are the original images from DVIDS. Funnily though, when I downloaded one of them to my computer, the thumbnailed view in the Explorer did not have this blank area. De728631 (talk) 18:26, 28 September 2016 (UTC)
My upload script has a smart corruption detection routine, see User:Fæ/Project_list/DoD#Checks_and_error_handling, which should add corrupted files to Category:Images from DoD (digital errors). These were not flagged, possibly because of the files thumbnails being complete. I think there's no choice but to delete them as they are not recoverable unless new files are posted on DVIDS. -- (talk) 04:35, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

collapse overheated[edit]

hey fae, you can say i am overreacting to comments from someone with 200 uploads, but how are we supposed to deal with ideologically driven deletion by these people? just look at your talk page above. appalling. Slowking4 § Richard Arthur Norton's revenge 11:25, 30 September 2016 (UTC)

Collate the evidence, and present it in a neutral executive summary on COM:AN for review. If someone is misusing deletions the pattern should be easy to see, and this behaviour has resulted in blocks of some excessively persistent accounts in the past. Getting personal on the village pump, will end up working against you if you wish to have admin action taken later on. Few admins are interested in stepping into a dispute that can be made to look like a personal argument.
Stay mellow.
BTW, I've uploaded over 2 million images. I see large numbers of deletions, but the numbers barely scratch the surface of my history of contributions and most have perfectly good reasons to be nominated; so hardly anything to get worked up about. :-) -- (talk) 11:30, 30 September 2016 (UTC)
sorry, i don't do whack a mole. i am mellow, i just think negative feedback is required for dysfunctional conduct. any argument about conduct can be and has been spun as "personal attack". why would image uploaders put up with, and accept the deletionist behavior? we know who they are, why don't we redirect them to productive tasks? when is it that we are going to have a change in culture? you see the "not in scope" deletion above? no "perfectly good reason" there. Slowking4 § Richard Arthur Norton's revenge 12:13, 2 October 2016 (UTC)

Repeating this here for good measure[edit]

If you need to delete images, then by all means go through the process. Commons has standards it needs to uphold, and I would not presume to override them. However, please do me the kindness of never, ever, coming to my talk page or otherwise communicating with me. I leave you well alone, please do the same.

(P.S. is it possible to nominate images for deletion in a batch? You may wish to do that and then I'll only get a single message from you, after which we can cease any and all communication. That would be preferable if needs be.) Panyd (talk) 13:23, 30 September 2016 (UTC)
